I still don't know why Bill Callahan dropped the Smog alias to record under his own name. At the time, before this came out I assumed it must be to mark a change in direction for him. That doesn't seem to be the case however. "Woke On A Whaleheart" is just another Smog album, really. You could point to songs like "Footprints", "Diamond Dancer" or "Sycamore" and say that they are (brilliant) uptempo spikes in his otherwise bleak landscape, but he's always done this. "Hit The Ground Running" from "Knock Knock" or "Goldfish Bowl" from "Wild Love" prove that. He touches on country on "The Wheel", but he's done that before too. I guess all you need to know is that it's marvellous.
