Stars of the Lid's seventh studio album saw a slight hesitation in what appeared to be a progression further into orchestrated ambience. The previous LP's rich, stately tone does make up a lot of the character, but a return to the exploration of non-musical, abstract sonic nuance is where the magic is here, still wonderful in repress.

9/10 Phil Staff review, 29 March 2007

STARS OF THE LID are back after a long hiatus with a brand new 2CD (vinyl to follow). And Their Refinement Of The Decline sees them in total blistering form. Well as far as Stars of The Lid could ever blister..... it's just about the most breathtaking ambient moving music you'll hear this side of the River Wharf. It's well floaty.... it's like floating in space.....gravity doesn't exist and you're drifting in and out of consciousness as you're surrounded by the blackness..... That's before a comet comes along and smashes your face off. Apparently the dude who ran 4AD says SOTL are making the most important music of the 21st century. That is some recommendation indeed.  Go Ivo! This is incredible and for fans of ambient, cinematic lushness this is beautiful stuff. All that and the last track of the album is called December Hunting For Vegetarian Fuckface.... genius.

10/10 Jimbo Customer review, 7th October 2015

Sadly our contemporary existence appears to have encased us within a behemoth of sensory overload, these rapids have slowly sneaked their way into every sacred corner of our lives and have squeezed our opportunities for daydreaming. Arguably the very act of daydreaming is an essential part of who we are and how we function, even a short bus journey into town does not escape buzzing wifi signals and the company of many in robotic states smudging fingers across tiny screens. Never before in the history of our species has our cycle of night and day been so interrupted by artificial light, most profoundly the blue part of the spectrum from our obsession with lit-screen devices. Allowing the time to reflect away from artificial stimuli is a nice way of spending a few hours, doing this in silence for most of us who are not lucky enough to live in the middle of nowhere is impossible with the background drones of the city in the distance .

This vinyl set creates a sense of distance from everything, smudging out the sythetic dirge whilst re-awakening a distant past era. If a godspeedyoublackemperor! song were a boeing 747, slowly making its way across the smooth tarmac into a position on the runway, to then ramp up the engines and impossibly take flight into a turbulent night, then Stars of the Lid are a glider being gently pulled into position and then unhooked and left alone to be buffeted by gentle thermals above the magnificence of our planet.

10/10 Dan Customer review, 2nd June 2010

This is absolutely brilliant.  I wasn't prepared for the maturity of the writing and the quality of the production - it really is ball-bouncingly-good and recommendable to anyone.

I will eagerly await their next release, that's for sure....

10/10 Ben Customer review,

This is a wonderful record.... its that simple. Definitively the most impressive record to come out this year.
