9/10 Brian Staff review, 08 March 2007
A chance Saturday night out in Leeds the other night provided me with the chance to capture Bristol's medieval skronk poppers SAFETYWORD, a tumbling, morphing brainwarp of a band. We've got their debut self released CD in & even though i've left, i had to be the one to give it a huge plug. 'Mans Name is Legion' is a jittery blend of David Byrne, Contemporary psych folk, Clap your Hands Say Yeah and early James mashed up with the most delightful bits of cosmic 60's freakrock ala Red Krayola & Beefheart. It's a right mesmerising rollercoaster of an album with almost african guitars tickling your ears, galloping schizo bass rhythms, a hugely exitable & intuitive drummer. More time changes than you can shake a stick at oooooh it's delightful. Proper free & joyful music with dark, surreal lyrics seemingly derived from the very old days. The lead singer really does remind me of the bastard child of Byrne & Red Krayola mouthpiece Mayo Thompson. Fans of US art rock such as Dismemberment Plan & Les Savy Fav may wanna cock an ear to this band's out of step, off kilter magic. Heartily recommended! x Brian Danglehose
