Essie Jain: 'We Made This Ourselves' (Leaf) A very mellow, melancholic, down tempo singer-songwriter offering from the new signing on the UK's Leaf label. Not exactly new, this collection was formerly released in America by the Ba Da Bing label. At times fragile and moving, the voice is clear and pure with a sparse backing of guitars and piano that add to the largely blue mood of this collection.Previously compared to Nick Drake, Low and Eliot Smith, these ten tracks lift themselves above the current dearth of female singer-songwriters through the sheer power of the atmospherics induced by the clear intonations and careful introduction of strings. If I had the time to listen to the lyrics I'd inform you of their content, that said, I can guarantee the mood is really sad sounding. One to live with. Recommended.
