8/10 Brian Staff review, 11 January 2007
Never really checked out the strange delights MIRA CALIX has to offer. Warp obviously have faith in her as she's been a staple of their roster for years now. But this new album 'Eyes Set Against the Sun' is the first time i've cocked an ear her way. A virtual waterfall interspersed with voodoo witch chanting leads into some clanking, whirring & twinkling madness which sounds utterly divine. If you could have a rough reference i'd say Leopard Leg crossed with Psapp. Possessed industrial folk music for an ice chamber. Side 2 on the record is meandering, experimental piano over acoustics, faint keys & what sounds like a shagged kids xylophone (well it's a glockenspiel actually, & there's a kids choir buried  in this album somewhere!). It's turning into a subtle exploration of sound is this album. Towards the end of Side 2 you hear Terry Riley-esque plinking repetition, whirring noises & echo-laden field recordings permeate the atmos, maaan. The minimalism continues apace on track seven. Neo classical synthetic strings rub shoulders with wierd muttering, plinking blooping effects & some sinister samples. It sounds like a movie soundtrack to a gothic horror set in a haunted lighthouse. Creepy. All in all a well excecuted album of experimenta/ minimalist electro/acoustics with a slightly sinister vibe going on. I'm told this ain't nearly as abstract as her older stuff, an intrinsic sense of melody pervades throughout a lot of it. A record that could well take you on a very rewarding journey! 2LP/CD
