8/10 Penrith Steve Customer review, 30th October 2014
Sparklehorse AKA Mark Linkous has always had something in common with the Beatles – the fact that he is a genius songwriter making great music, but on the opening track of his final album “Dreamt For Light Years In The Belly Of A Mountain”, the guitar’s descending arpeggio has more than a passing resemblance to the fab four’s “Dear Prudence”.
After 3 absolutely brilliant albums “Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot” (1995), “Good Morning Spider” (1998) and “It’s A Wonderful Life” (2001) (All 10/10, by the way), this doesn’t quite live up, but the album is still very good. “Shade and Honey” is brilliant as is “Some Sweet Day”. “Ghost In The Sky” rocks like “Happy Man”. Overall though, it is not as good as the rest but sill very good, as you would expect.
Every time I think of Sparklehorse I remember how I felt when I first heard “Someday I Will Treat You Good”, the first single from the debut LP, and how it blew me away. The single came out on the same day as “Beauty of the Ride” by Sebadoh, what a day! Ah! Music. Mark Linkous RIP.
