I've just about recovered from the carnage that was the awesome ATP festival so I'll proceed to review some records between teasing Phil about the fact he's not getting his Wii console in time for christmas. First up is the second album from ZOMBINA AND THE SKELETONES. From the imagery used in the artwork I'd made the false assumption that these were another Cramps wanna be band. I'd completely misjudged them. 'Death Valley High' is a punk rock album but not in the conventional sense. Sure there are trashy garage rock moments but the songs are about watching horror movies at the drive in and prom night. There's a 50's / 60's High School kinda vibe with catchy pop melodies. In fact the track 'Prom Night' is a smart accapella with hand claps, finger snaps and Beach Boys-esqe harmonies. The girl / boy vocals work really well. Among their list of influences are The Ramones, The Cramps, Blondie, The B-52's and Rocket from the Crypt which gives you some idea of where they're coming from. An immensely fun blend of punk rock, new wave and doo-wop. CD only on Ectoplatic Records.
