- Bullhead by Melvins
10/10 Tom 21st May 2018
It's hard to explain how influential the Melvins are; mention their name and even a casual fan of alternative rock may make the link to Nirvana and their influence on Kurt Cobain. Going deeper, and with reference to this particular period of the Melvins' ever-evolving sound, 1991's Bullhead is a stone-cold stoner/doom/drone rock classic which has influenced the likes of Harvey Milk, Earth, Neurosis, Eyehategod and Boris (who took their name from the opening track of this record). You'd struggle to find a more enduring and effective musical combo in all of rock music as guitarist/vocalist Buzz Osbourne and drummer Dale Crover and they are both at the peak of their powers here. Slow and low repetitive riffs and brutalist drumming give Bullhead a primal power that has never been bettered in the genre, either by other bands or the Melvins themselves.
