6/10 Ant Staff review, 14 November 2006The JOHANN JOHANNSSON album 'IBM 1401 A Users Manual' has landed in my review pile. It's a thoroughly pleasant album this one. It makes me feel all big and grown up listening to classical music. It's a pipe and slippers job man. This has huge sweeping, epic strings galore and in places is not unlike the soundtrack to a BBC wildlife documentry. If you're feeling the Max Richter album then this is worthy of investigation, although this doesn't evoke the same level of spine tingling emotion. There is a concept to this album about an old IBM computer from 1964 and there is a narrative with operating instructions, hence the title. With the current popularity of the neo-classical genre at the moment no doubt this will be massive. On 4AD.
10/10 matt Customer review,
Amazing work from a musician who constantly pushes the boundaries of modern classical music. The IBM talk can be a little off-putting from the outside but this is a release that needs more than one listen to be appreciated. The stunning 'The Sun's Gone Dim and the Sky's Turned Black' closes a release that is anything but unmoving but will not be to everyone's ears.
