9/10 Ant 13 September 2012

Pioneer, innovator, visionary artist Pauline Oliveros turned 80 years old this year (HAPPY BIRTHDAY Pauline!) and to celebrate the achievements of this remarkable lady there have been a number of very exciting releases including an immense 12 disc set on Important Records. The always impressive Taiga label mark the occasion this week with two releases (check the Deep Listening Band 2LP) by the inimitable sonic artist.

Currently on my turntable is 'Primordial / Lift'. This work was originally released on Table Of The Elements in 1999 however this lavish 2LP documents the second performance from September 2010 at Issue Project Room in Brooklyn NYC.

The performers on this occasion were Anne Bourne (cello & voice), Andrew Deutsch (sampler), Miguel Frasconi (glass drones), David Grubbs (eguitar), Jason Huang (violin), Suzanne Thorpe (oscillator) and the good lady herself plays V accordion. The players perform around the oscillator which glides from 7.8hz to 13hz (The transition of the earth's resonant frequency over a fifty year period) . Around this foundation the players weave otherworldly  celestial sound and sonic star patterns. The results are complex yet easily digestible and make for an intriguing and rather pleasant listening experience.

The sleeve notes give a wonderful insight to the performers instructions and options complete with Oliveros' diagrams.

Edition of 500 copies on 200g vinyl, mastered by James Plotkin and housed in a lovely slipcase jacket. Recommended.
