9/10 Brian Staff review, 15 November 2006
Strangest compilation of the month must be this PLAGUE SONGS thang on 4AD, an eclectic roster of 10 artists having being commissioned to write a song about one of the ten deadly biblical plagues. Interesting concept indeed! Starting off with the vicious Plan B-esque gritty UK hip hop of Kalashnikoff (Blood),  collapsing into the moving folk rock of King Creosote (Relate the Tale), Magnetic Fields' Stephen Merritt offers 'The Meaning of Lice', disarmingly strange electro pop ala Momus,  Brian Eno & Robert Wyatt contribute a sad, atmospheric piece underlaid with some disturbing effects & mournful navel gazing male/female vocals. That one is all about those lovely little blighters, 'Flies'. I could go on & on. It's a rewarding listen, full of moving, eye opening & frankly crazy songs by past masters & contemporary left field artists....BUT what is Scott Walker on? His 'Darkness' contribution is very, very unnerving. Nice packaging with booklet, if you like boundaries pushed then stick this mother in yer basket (case) CD only
