Christ this is good. It's so good it goes beyond good and gets better. As the title suggests it's a compilation of American  protest and anti war songs from yesteryear. From the Hawaiian influenced opening track called Old Man Atom by Sons of The Pioneers you're hooked for the entire duration of the album. Maggie has just pointed out that it's almost like proto rap on that tune... interesting!  Aside from the sentiment which is all very relevant (the majority of songs being anti war and we are currently happily destroying each other left right and centre) it's the strength of the music which carries this. It's mainly blues but there's a healthy cross section of americana, bluegrass, country,  folk, proto rap....allsorts in there. There is something on there for everyone. If you enjoyed the John & Sheila Peel Big Pig Blues comp you'll love this CD. Actually I've just noticed inside the liner notes this compilation is partly inspired by The Rebel yell section on Peel's show. This is proper party music featuring the likes of Bessie Smith, Big Bill Broonzy, Billie Holliday, Furrie Lewis, Woody Guthrie and lots lots more. Probably not the sort of thing a lot of you would normally buy, but I'd strongly urge you to get it cos it's utterly wonderful and it's one of a few records we've all agreed on. A fantastic historical  and musical document.
