8/10 Penrith Steve Customer review, 27th October 2014

What a great idea Rick Rubin had when he asked Johnny Cash to come and record for him. A few original songs and some covers from artists as diverse as Nick Lowe, “The Beast In Me” and Glen Danzig “Thirteen”. This, the first of what turned out to be a series of six albums, including two that were released posthumously, is just Cash and his guitar. The decision to strip everything back was a good one. “Tennessee Stud” and “The Man Who Couldn’t Cry” were recorded live at Johnny Depp’s Viper Club and recall his classic performances at Folsom Prison and San Quentin Prison with the audience laughing, cheering and whistling. This album reinvented Johnny Cash and introduced him to a whole new generation of fans. This isn’t the best of this series of albums but was the first and it is still pretty bloody good.
