Has there ever been a more metal album title than ‘Phase 3: Thrones And Dominions’? If so then we’re yet to find it. And verily, if there were ever a band who deserved to claim the crown of most-metal-record-name, that band would be Earth. The group’s sophomore LP (yes, the ‘3’ makes it confusing) is more varied than their previous work. Droning doom-metal is still the order of the day here - see the peyote-hazed ‘Tibetan Quaaludes’ - but we also find Earth taking in arid noise (‘Phase 3: Agni Detonating Over the Thar Desert’) and stumbling upon the sort of beatific pastures that would later come to influence Sunn O))) ('Thrones & Dominions').

Phase 3: Thrones and Dominions is one of those recordings that gives a newcomer a new perspective on the potential of the electric guitar. In this case, the idea is simple: do away with everything else and replace it with a dense wall of buzzing guitars. There are no vocals whatsoever on this recording, and drums are used very sparingly. The 'bottom' of the music is supplied by low drones from the guitars rather than bass lines. There are no solos or obvious lead parts, just simple riffs and feedback. It's just a great time and something different.
