7/10 Penrith Steve Customer review, 29th July 2015
Howie Beck is a Canadian singer/songwriter and drummer, this eponymous album was his third and was released in 2005. It was the follow-up to 2002’s “Hollow” which is the album that got him noticed. He has an ear-friendly sound, similar to the likes of Ed Harcourt or Kevin Tihista.
“Alice” opens the album and is pleasant and melodic, as you’d expect. “Don’t Be Afraid” is reminiscent of Elvis Costello and “The Books Beside Her Bed” reminds me of Elliott Smith’s self-titled album, although he doesn’t have whatever it is that Elliott Smith had that made him so special. This is far from run-of-the-mill stuff though. “How Do Feel” is lushly orchestrated and has a similar quality to “Playground Love” Air. You could do a lot worse than this, although I think “Hollow” is a better album.
