The Ride by Joan As Policewoman

JOAN AS POLICE WOMAN caught my ear last year with her quirky folkism & caberet torch song wibbly-ness. With the likes of Joanna Newsom having every music journo salivating like retarded adolecent children all over the world's already saturated media, this talented lady deserves a look in. I struggle with some of her tracks, syrupy smooth MOR/70s style gear like some Carly Simon/ Carpenters hybrid. Very flared white suits & campari is the re-issued 'The Ride' single. Can imagine this gracing drivetime on Radio 2. It's the flip, 'We Don't wn It', a solo track minus her band & also a tribute to Elliot Smith, that wins it for me. Her voice glides & swoops over a plaintive, gentle guitar occasionaly gently cracking in the merest split second, you can hardly hear. A voice tender, strong yet vulnerable. It's sweet birdsong to me after suffering The View. Red vinyl 7" on Reveal
