I'm rather enjoying this new Mono album on Temporary Residence. I've managed to skillfully avoid Mono til now. Not entirely sure why cos this is fantastic. It's called You Are There and it's recorded by the guitar lord of noise Albini. The main point I have to make about this album is that it's almost exactly like a cross between Explosions In The Sky and Godspeed. Honestly! For once these are not lazy comparisons and I think they probably do it with as much style and are up there with aforementioned royalty of all things rock and post. Totally wonderful and if you're into post rock you need this cos otherwise people will call you a dick.

After the early records that were excellent examples of prime post-rock, but had an edginess to them that was almost harsh, for me 'You Are There' is where Mono really nailed it. Pick pretty much any record of their catalogue and you can expect quality, but I've listened to this LP a hell of a lot, and there isn't a second wasted, not a moment where Mono drop the ball.

'The Flames Beyond The Cold Mountain' is perfectly titled too, as the track builds from a gorgeous hazy intro, to a crescendo around 6 mins in that dissolves into looped noise, before gently dropping back and then building once more, then finally at 13 minutes the guitars are firing off into outer space as the track ends. It's an amazing way to open any record, and the worry is that things can only go downhill from there, but fear not. The rest of the LP is just a beautiful, breathtaking, violent, and transfixing as that stunning opener. The 10 minute title track is probably the most gorgeous of the lot, but in order to truly appreciate what Mono have created here you need to sit down, headphones on, and just let it enrapture you for the next hour. Time very well spent if you do.

Quick note on the vinyl repress of 2018 - download included, and nice pressing, but not a gatefold sleeve, although lovely booklet included.
