Axis of Evil by Pink Mountaintops

7/10 Penrith Steve 29th July 2015

Pink Mountaintops are the other band fronted by Stephen McBean of Black Mountain. If Black Mountain’s brand of heavy rock suggests the struggle of climbing a mountain, Pink Mountaintops music might suggest the type of music you might make once you’d reached the top where the air is thinner, you’re relieved and relaxed….and perhaps a bit light headed.

“Axis Of Evol” is their second album and opener “Comas” is a folky, acoustic tune, in sharp contrast to the Black Sabbath style riffs of Black Mountain. “Cold Criminals” is more experimental and sounds quite a lot like Bill Callahan. “Slaves” has similar lead guitar and melody to what you would expect from Black Mountain but it’s framed in a more airy, psychedelic way. “Plastic Man You’re The Devil” is a bluesy number, complete with slide guitar. “Lord, Let Us Shine” is fuzzy, drum machine led, religious cult style anthem.

It’s patchy, and not as good as Black Mountain, but there are bits of this I like quite a lot.
