9/10 Phil Staff review, 17 March 2011
Onto the chirpily named Death Chants with their deluxe reissue of a long out of print CDr that came out on Time Lag donkeys years ago (well 4 years to be precise). The band are no more but during their 2 year rampage they knocked out a bunch of limited CDr's and tapes which were gobbled up by you experimental folkalists. Firstly I'm gonna say how deluxe this is. Super nice thick cardboard sleeve with colour art pasted on the front and back, lush gatefold sleeve, hand numbered spine, 180 gram red wax... mmm tasty! The music itself is lo-fi home based psych folk with a playful childlike feel to it, and some of the tracks have a harmonium on... I'm a total sucker for a harmonium. Loads of acoustic guitars and space everywhere, random things drop in and out in an almost jammy way but it all seems kinda coherent. The tracks with female vocals add an extra dimension as they're all breathy and lovely. Nice! It's the kind of thing you're gonna need to sit down and spend some time with and I can see it becoming one of your favourite albums which is why they've done this deluxe reissue 4 years on. It's obviously affected some people in that way and listening to the charming sounds within you can't but help be sucked in.
