The Nightmares on Wax re-issue campaign wouldn't be complete without this, their most well known and well regarded album. As our customer reviewer Andrew righty points out, this was the album they went from bleep to bong and is full of classic mid 90's style laid-back smoky grooves.
10/10 Andrew Customer review, 8th September 2014
I bought this back when it first came out, I was a fan of NOW based on Aftermath, Case of Funk EP etc... and as such the apparently sudden switch from bleep to bong was a suprise, however as this roughly came at the time of the Bristol sound explosion and the rise of trip hop, the shift in style shouldn't have been so unexpected. I guess it demonstrated that George Evelyn was more than a one trick pony.
Smokers Delight quickly became a favourite and pretty much 20 years on (jeez am I really that old?) it remains one of my favourite LP's. The lilting, rhythms the textures and the global, yet uniquely British sound really do mean that it does just what it said in the label. (Delight smokers that is rather than warp them). Even the short interlude type tracks, such as Me + You are enjoyable. Standouts such as Rise & Stars are beautiful trippy numbers, that despite the smoky late night vibe of the album also conjure up sunshine. Mission Venice mixes in the sound of a vintage 60's spy theme (similar to the Persuaders theme) whilst other tracks go for real balearic chilled percussion and light keys. You can see why George Evelyn made Ibiza his home, this album seems to be the sound of his musical vision opening up, away from the dark Warehouse and blinking into the Mediterranean sun.
I cannot recommend this album highly enough, NOW have come close to repeating its splendour (skip Mind Elevation but pretty much any other album is worth a listen) but for me this remains the defining work in the canon.
