The mid-oughties: what were you doing? I was alive, I’m fairly sure it’s true, but I wasn’t listening to drone rock quite yet. Jackie-O Motherfucker were deep into their earthy sonics and crafted a wonderful collection of ambient hymns that grew out of their interest in blues and gospel, eventually culminating in the meandering ‘Flags of the Sacred Harp’. Listening back on this reissue, it’s amazing how well they could both blur their sound into a loose mirage and clear away its cobwebs until you could hear every single dropping pin.

This iteration of Jackie-O made quite splendid and generally pretty noise, with opener “Nice One” living with its name in splendid harmony, the shimmering, mantra-looping song recalling Dirty Three before dissolving into whirring, clattering sonics that sound like someone scrubbing dishes backwards. “Spirits” is another mix of elemental and warped sounds with people walking about their house picking up things to make resonant, making for a kind of glorious seasickness where the tune moves calmly and evenly as its passengers -- string bends, chance hums and groaning strings -- bob up and down.

Sometimes I forget that drones can rustle and overgrow and have shrubbery, and ‘Flags’ is a fantastic reminder of how lovely a well-worn environment can sound. “The Louder Roared the Sea” stands out as a favourite, a drone that sounds like three different lovely pieces at once, its rumbling drums trying to bridge the gap between a minimal guitar ballad, a distant classical melody, folksy strums and an overcoat of distorted ambience. I bet half these things don’t even actually exist in the song -- it’s just so busy with warm sounds that I start to imagine a few of my own. The fullness of Jackie-O’s sound on ‘Flags’ makes it an absolute treat for the ears. Essential self-care noise.
