9/10 Dave Waller Customer review, 29th June 2014

This is a live acoustic solo show by Jeff Mangum, frontman of the band Neutral Milk Hotel, recorded at Jittery Joe's in Athens Georgia on 7 March 1997. It features 3 songs from the band's On Avery Island album, released 2 years earlier, plus 5 which were subsequently included on the the album In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, which was released the following year. There are also 2 songs which were not on either album - Engine and I Will Bury You In Time - and a Phil Spector cover (I Love How You Love Me).

It's a great performance, but also quaintly informal and lo-fi. There is quite a lot of interaction with the audience between songs, and several songs are played as requests. A more polished recording might have edited out a young child, audible on several songs. The CD is enhanced with a Quicktime video of the full performance.

A must-have item for any Neutral Milk Hotel fan!
