The Grifters were a Memphis-based indie band with a scrappy, lo-fi, happily-noisy kick to them, particularly on their earlier records. One Sock Missing is one of those records, a fun alt-rock tumble with a distinctly 90’s feel. Initially released by Shangri-La Records and now reissued by Fat Possum.
8/10 Jack Customer review, 1st March 2018
The Grifters definitely deserve mention. If not for their songs, their chemistry as a band, and their "indie" credibility, then their production style and ability to push limits. This entire album, along with most of their other albums, is recorded on four track. It's almost hard to believe while listening to the album, everything sounds soo deliberately and beautifully put. The band seems to have a noble following, most of which would describe The Grifters as nothing less than legendary (especially for people who have been to one of their shows).
