8/10 Penrith Steve Customer review, 24th February 2016

Despite being released in the same year as “Flip Your Wig”, “New Day Rising” doesn’t quite have the songwriting chops of the three albums that came after it. After Bob Mould’s opening uncompressing blast of the title track, Grant Hart comes into his own, “The Girl Who Lives On Heaven Hill” is a distorted on raw version of his songwriting which he would perfect on later albums. Bob Mould’s songs get more melodic here, albeit still played at dizzying speeds. “I Apologize” is a good example. “Book about UFOs” and “59 Times The Pain” and “I Don’t Know What You’re Talking About” are also good.
