8/10 Penrith Steve Customer review, 12th January 2015
On “Tanglewood Numbers” Silver Jews have transformed into more of rock band than they ever used to be. The dusty, slacker style is more-or-less gone, the sound is more immediate and punchy. “Punks In The Beerlight” is a decent opener and is more indie-rock than we’re used to getting from the band. However, there are a few signs of the previous band, “Animal Shapes” and “I’m Getting Back into Getting Back into You” wouldn’t be out of place on 2001’s “Bright Flight” and are two of the highlights here. David Berman still weighs in with fabulous lyrics. Pick any line from “Sometimes a Pony Gets Depressed” for an example, starting with the title. A bit different, for the Silver Jews, still good though!
