I was a tad confused about this record when I popped it on the old wireless. It starts with a haunting track called “Evil Next To Blue”, which has a country ballad type vibe. It has the feel of a whiskey soaked troubadour, venting his spleen against the world, and wincing about lost love and the need to be accepted. It's heavy on emotion, but its heady sentiment failed to wash with me, I thought it sounded like The Frogs (...”Being oiled down by furry young men”...). Its seriousness and drab romanticism was totally lost on me. I should have been trapped under a duvet of emotion, but it was not to be. Alvarius B doles out song after song of unrelenting bleakness on this, a reissue of his 2005 album, which is full to the brim of sneering ballads, and haunting bleak imagery. Some of these tales are supposedly based on true events, which makes some of the more revealing pieces all the more harrowing. I just couldn't get into his bleak world view. The production is good though, and you could potentially lose yourself in this maze of Americana. Its an ambitious record that will delight some and cause mass suicides in other areas...
