8/10 Penrith Steve Customer review, 21st July 2015
Jon Spencer's brand of funky alternative blues first caught my ear back in the early '90's and "Extra Width" from 1993 was the album that did it. It opens with "Afro" which is now typical of his best stuff - a great riff and a great groove. It also has a buzzsaw guitar solo. As far as visceral rock goes, it doesn't get much better. Jon Spencer is kind of like an American Mark E. Smith - verbal ejaculations all over the place. "Soul Typecast" is another standout on here that deserves special mention, but it's just a lovely clatter of an album, really.
