9/10 Ben Customer review, 15th September 2014
This treat from the early Smog years was looking sad without a review, so I thought I would extol its virtues for the benefit of any passing shoppers. Monsieur Callahan doesn't have his wise-old-country voice here, nor the obtuse, elegant lyricism that carries his later albums. This is a record full of blunt edges and wonky performances: odd percussion rattling around, scratchy cellos straining into tune and a raspy young Bill, singing about a whole load of things and being typically unpleasant. Case in point the deliberately off-kilter electro-drums in opener 'Strawberry Rash', or the delightful couplet chanted over 'Your wedding': "I remember entering you- entering you
I'm gonna be drunk- so drunk at your wedding".
I'll stop at track 2; every song has its own particular hooks (in terms of inventive recording or writing), and there is more than enough malicious humour and irony peering through the lofi production to soothe any listener's worried brow. Julius Caesar also has an inexplicable name and a particularly skilled drawing of a chair on it. What more can I say?
