9/10 Penrith Steve Customer review, 12th January 2015
The Natural Bridge is arguably the best, certainly my favourite, Silver Jews album. David Berman is on top form as a lyricist, with his words perfectly matched to his lo-fi drawl and laid back strumming. The first line from the perfect opening track, “How To Rent A Room”, “No, I don’t really wanna die, I only want to die in your eyes” or “Darling you look so beautiful when your hair’s all hung in jewels, and sometimes I find it really hard to choose between a pair of black and pair of brown shoes” from “Black and Brown Blues” are just two of many glowing examples on show. Also, those two songs are among the best in the Silver Jews catalogue, not just on this album. The band’s performance throughout is endearingly slack – every note is just in the right place. “Pet Politics”, “Inside The Golden Days Of Missing You”, “Albermarle Station” and “The Frontier Index” are other stand out tracks on this great album.
