Apparently so popular with fans at the time of it’s vinyl release back in 1988 it funded his family’s move to a farm in Ireland. According to legend Stephen Stapleton and Diana Rogerson set up effects units to create a feedback loop with no original input signal, then Stapleton discovered he could manipulate the feedback by adjusting his proximity to the effects units. So they recorded a few hours of him waving his fingers across them like a sorcerer and the results still sound mesmerising to me. This magic was apparently due to a later confirmed electrical fault in the studio hence the “our thanks to Electricity for making this recording possible" line in the sleevenotes. I can totally recommend getting lost in all three discs in succession if you have the time and inclination to be transported from your mortal shell into the abyss and back. Throughout the feeling is ominous, one of impending dread yet somehow tranquil and lethargy inducing. If there’s a dark ambient/ minimal/ drone Hall of Fame then ‘Soliloquy For Lilith’ should be it’s superstar.

One time I played it and for a moment thought I was an amoeba. When a listener can be hallucinatory reduced to a single cell by the power of electricity converted to sound, that’s something truly powerful.

10/10 Ian G Customer review, 10th September 2015

This is, quite simply, a copper-bottomed NWW classic. A recording of endless fascination which belongs in any serious collection of ambient/drone /experimental music. It's accompanied me on many long train journeys.

Originally a 2CD release, Soliloquy for Lilith was expanded to 3CDs in 2003 for its twenty-fifth anniversary. This latest version retains the third disc of additional material. The only difference is a cosmetic one - the gold-embossed box is now red-embossed. Hardly a critical matter, and the red's so perfectly judged I'm tempted to buy again.
