Lovely debut album in from Calexico's John Convertino. Entitled 'Ragland', Its a largely piano led work with intermittent complimentary percussion initially coming at me like a neo classical free jazz collision. The opener 'Curb' really reminds me of Tortoise with the loose drums spilling trails of chaotic order. He's a respected composer of accordion & piano pieces in his own right is this fella & it really shows. I find a genuine and understated beauty in these 12 instrumentals, a tragic sadness that stirs you for sure. For fans of Eluvium, Rachels & the recent Goldmund LP on Type to name but a few. Heartily recommended. CD/LP
