Typical Bill Callahan to make an album of exquisite dark-hued confessional songwriting the lumber it with that title. The eighth Smog album sees him move further away from his lo-fi roots on a looser collection highlighted by the masterful and darkly humorous Dress Sexy at My Funeral which is perfect fodder for his deep-hued baritone voice.

Dongs is not what fans of Smog's early work will be looking for. It is loaded with songs that nuzzle up to popular song styles, with decent production (compared to the 4 track stuff on most of the old albums). Still, this album isn't selling the staunchly DIY Callahan out. Quite the contrary. The songs are still insightful and slightly weird. For example, "Dress Sexy At My Funeral", the album's second cut. Strange title, hilariously dry song. And that's just the beginning. I would recommend this as a starting point for anyone curious about Smog.
