9/10 Tom Customer review, 31st May 2018
Papa M (one of the many aliases of former Slint guitarist David Pajo) comes in many forms. As an outlet for Pajo's quieter impulses, Papa M have released albums of largely acoustic folk songs (Papa M Sings, Whatever Mortal), electronic-tinged post rock (Hole of Burning Alms) and more recently the fractured ideas that Pajo has come up with since a suicide attempt and a motorbike accident left him wheelchair bound (Highway Songs).
Released in 1999, Live From a Shark's Cage is one of the best Papa M albums, combining Pajo's work in his serene side project Aerial M along with the layered post-rock of his time in Tortoise. Simply put, it's a sublime album that puts Pajo's sweet soul on front street. His playing has always been sensitive, intertwining deceptively simple melodies from multiple layers of guitars, and on Live From a Shark's Cage it strikes a particularly nostalgic note.
