Confusingly perhaps, Elliott Smith was the second solo album by the esteemed songwriter following on from his debut Roman Candle. It was the first album where we perhaps collectively thought we were in the presence of greatness. Despite (or maybe because of) its lo-fi- back to basics sound it contains some of Smiths best compositions and paves the way for his all time classic Either/Or.

- Elliott Smith by Elliott Smith
9/10 Penrith Steve 29th June 2015
Elliott Smith's eponymous album was his second and showcased a songwriter with incredible songwriting ability who doesn't like to show off. It's probably the album I like most after his masterpiece "Either/Or" I find the lo-fi recording adds a great deal to the emotion he puts into his performances and like the man himself, it's not showy or glossy. The highlights on here are "Needle In The Hay", "Clementine", "Coming Up Roses" and "St. Ides Heaven". It's all good though, you can't go wrong here, it's a must have album.
