Much, much better then is this CD I have in my miniscule, throbbing paws (probably borrowed from Clinton). By Jason & the Astronauts (not Argonauts as the 3 of us misread when the debut 7" landed), on that fine Kentish math-core imprint, Unlabel. Called 'The Mourning After Math' (have these fellas been in the pub with 65 Days Of Static? - (and where's the 's'? -Clint)) this is angular, thrilling & tight music, 8 brief tracks taking twists & turns around the bloated corpse of post hardcore, adding a dinky synth to proceedings & even some sharp new wave guitar that kicks Franz Ferdinand's shins in & runs away laughing. There seems to be a looseness to proceedings that renders the songs less po-faced & taut than most so called math-core, giving the tunes (for these ARE tunes!) a slightly lo-fi fuzzy edge to match the keen, urgent playing. The excellent track 4 is a sonic new wave party that sounds so much more vibrant, itchy & less fashion conscious than the likes of Q & Not U. All in all a hugely enjoyable Brit debut that leaves you panting for more!
