The time Sufjan first came to some kind of international prominence was with this wonderful sprawl of a record that was the first of his supposed 50 albums about US states. That didn't happen but this and Illinois were more than enough. Intricate, literate song craft, beautiful folk melodies and my favourite lyric of all time "and I've seen my wife, at the K-Mart, in strange ideas, we live apart".

9/10 Clinton Staff review, 03 December 2006
Now a brilliant and only slightly bizarre re-issue from Sufjan Stevens. Its the "Michigan" album which originally came out on Asthmatic Kitty but has now come out on Rough Trade (with two bonus tracks). What can I say? This was my favourite album of last year. Its an inventive, playful, tuneful work of sheer brilliance. I'm still finding new things in it a year on from first hearing it. Its  more sprawling than the recent "Seven Swans" with more instrumentation and a fuller sound. The man is a complete genius as far as I'm concerned. This is highly recommended.

9/10 Penrith Steve Customer review, 13th February 2015

Sufjan Stevens was quite prolific at one time, claiming his intention to record an album about every US state. That project is nowhere near completion yet but I guess he still has time. His prolific nature means that some of his later stuff was a bit patchy, to my ears anyway. If you were wondering which Sufjan Stevens album to buy, then "Michigan" is the one. Apart from it being brilliant form start to finish, his best song is on here, "For The Widows In Paradise, For The Fatherless Ypsilanti" - it is simply as good as music gets.
