The Graveyard and the Ballroom was the very first album released by A Certain Ratio. It was recorded by legendary producer Martin Hannett and shows the band in their beginning stages, starting to perfect the danceable post-punk that yielded true rewards on their follow up opus To Each. Re-issue on Mute.

7/10 Jack Customer review, 5th March 2018

This is quite the underrated album. Jangling, spacious guitars sounds, dark, brooding, yet dancey. Graveyard & The Ballroom puts live tracks in with studio recordings. I guess the band (or its label) were primarily interested in getting something out quickly. While the songs are kind of simplistic/monotonous and vocals shoddy, there's no denying that great, funky drummer (Donald Johnson). He really makes these songs come alive. Bassist Jeremy Kerr added enough punch to keep it interesting as well.
