The World of Arthur Russell is the 2004 compilation which captures the breadth of Russell’s musical capabilities. From the banging New York disco cuts, to his more introspective and experimental cello-centric songs, Soul Jazz have created something for both long-time fans and interested beginners.

Its Arthur doing Arthur things. What more could you possibly want? A great variety of all his different aliases and respective moods.

An absolutely essential collection of the late Arthur Russell's work, compiled long before very other sensitive disco producer started name checking him. Soul Jazz are always on point, here they nailed it with probably the most important tracks in Russell's discography.
Clearly there are gaps, he was a prolific producer, composer and artists, however as an introduction to his work or as a way of owning his finest moments for those with more to their life than obsessively collecting obscurities this is a list have.
Covering most bases you get the disco of Lola's 'Wax The Van', Dinosaur L's 'Go Bang' and the superb 'Is It All Over My Face' by Loose Joint's. This is avant disco, punk funk percussion, slightly awkward vocal deliveries but never less than hypnotic and exotic.
Elsewhere the album covers his more thoughtful and inward looking work, from the gentle epic 'In the Light Of The Miracle' a beautiful 13 minute meditation to 'A Little Lost' an affecting short self sung piece both under his own his own name.
Dive in, the World Of Arthur Russell is a lovely, intriguing place.
