On this, their third album Belle and Sebastian were getting used to becoming some kind of accidental indie-rock royalty. They became more knowing with songs about US fanzine 'Chickfactor' and A & R man extraordinaire Seymour Stein. Here, leader Stuart Murdoch began his crusade to let other band members sing which is always a bad idea as at the end of the day it's all about the voice innit?. Still, good album. Re-issued as part of the pre-new album celebrations.
8/10 Penrith Steve Customer review, 11th February 2015
This is another very good and consistent album by Belle and Sebastian. "It Could Have Been A Brilliant Career" opens the album and is typical of their soft, melodic indie-pop. The same is true of "Is It Wicked Not To Care?" which is sung by Isobel Campbell who left the band in 2002. The title track is a brilliant, upbeat and melodic song that differs from the norm in terms of instrumentation - led by electric piano and featuring hand claps. There is an eponymously named song about Seymour Stein, head of Sire Records and the man who signed Madonna among others. Other highlights include "Sleep The Clock Around" which is built on an almost Krautrock-like back beat and "Chickfactor".
