7/10 Penrith Steve Customer review, 28th October 2014
“Down The River Of Golden Dreams” opens with a scratchy recording of some honky-tonk piano from which the beautiful “It Ends With A Fall” emerges. The soft electric piano and Will Sheff’s swooning croon are a treat for the ears. “For The Enemy” paces itself nicely, a long, slow ballad reminiscent of Steve Westfield and the Slow Band without the grunge element. There is a slow burning soul to this album, in the vein of “The Dance” by PG Six, perhaps. “Blanket and Crib”, a gospel choir is sadly missing and would really have been the cherry on the cake, “The War Criminal Rises and Speaks” and especially “Maine Island Lovers”.
A good album to listen to a night after a long day.
10/10 James Clarke Customer review,
With such poetic prose, and emotionally strained vocals (sung with an honest delivery). 'Down The River Of Golden Dreams' is a perfect demonstration of what good song writing should sound like. Will Sheff and co. weave a web of silky folk songs, inhabited by Sheff's predatory lyrics. One of the most under-rated albums of recent years. Imagine 'In the aeroplane' over the sea, but without the hype.
