Surfer Rosa by Pixies

One of the best albums ever recorded, Surfer Rosa was the near perfect amalgamation of Pixies scary but tuneful angular rock and the boxy live production of Steve Albini. The A side in particular is an incredible run of wild, high octane rock music the likes of which has barely been seen again. They made an equally good album in Doolittle before venturing onto slowly diminishing returns but Surfer Rosa catches Pixies at their absolute incendiary best.

4AD have seen fit to re release the 1st 3 Pixies LP's on vinyl (Come On Pilgrim, Surfer Rosa and Doolittle) which is a very good thing as they shouldn't have been out of print in the first place. Some of the most important records you'll ever own. I remember being utterly obsessed by Pixies and when I saw 'em live it changed my life and got me in to independent music. So you could say if it wasn't for them I wouldn't be here and you wouldn't be reading this. I believe that's called the butterfly effect.. All 3 are absolute genius. They really are. You probably know this already

This album completely changed my life and I am so happy it did. It was completely different to anything I’d heard.

I wish The Pixies had stuck with Steve Albini as a producer. From the moment the drums kick in on “Bone Machine” you think “This album sounds great”. This is the best Pixies album. It is timeless. This is one of THE best albums full stop. The songs are highly original and performed with such a fresh energy.

“Gigantic” and “Where Is My Mind?” are the obvious stand-outs, being the most accessible and instant tracks on here but everything else is mind blowing too, it may just take newcomers 3 or 4 listens before realising it. If you don’t own this, your record collection simply does not count.
