This is the third proper full length attempt by Pixies, a legendary band from Boston who actually made some fucking great records back when I were a lad. Bossanova is not one of their great records. To try and follow up the triple whammy of Come On Pilgrim, Surfer Rosa and Doolittle is quite a daunting and challenging task, evident in the relatively lacklustre and plodding songs contained herein. Even 'Velouria' sounds like a pastiche of past glories. Some folks thought Trompe Le Monde was even worse! They're totally wrong. This is the only slight duffer in the original Pixies ouevre but having said all that, a lousy Pixies album is still better than most rock albums ever released so I'd still recommend you give this a shot if you're mopping up after all these years. A worthy comparison would be QOTSA's relatively feeble Lullabies To Paralyse in the quality ratio stakes.

While Surfer Rosa is probably their most 'well-known' and Doolittle regarded as one of their best pieces, I find Bossanova to keep up with both of those albums in nearly every way. Cecilia Ann is a fun instrumental that always gets my hyped up, Rock Music is a hard-rocking and energetic screamer, Velouria is a classic made known by Weezer, Is She Weird is a fun song, but my favourite part of the album are the melodies wrapped up in the songs like Alison, Havalina, Stormy Weather and Down to the Well.
