9/10 Gregor Omelasz Customer review, 13th January 2017

You could call this album 'The End' for Autechre at this point in their career since they wiped the slate clean with Untilted. As such, this album can also be viewed as them being at the peak of their powers back then. It's Confield but more refined, and they had been leading up to this since 1995's Tri Repetae. There's no real right way to listen to Autechre, but all I know is that the stretch of Tri Repetae - Chiastic Slide - LP5 - Confield - Draft 7.30 is probably the best stretch they'll ever have. Although, I feel they've evolved beyond this, their more recent offerings require a severe battering of the ears these days, so in that respect, I miss being able to listen to 5 albums in one sitting because the evolution is much clearer.

Some switched off by the time Untilted came out, some switched off when Tri Repetae released, but if they cared about maintaining a certain fanbase, they wouldn't be Autechre, and they wouldn't be one of my all-time favourites. This album is up there with their best, but it's hard to define or rank their material when you can't listen to one without listening to the other.

Surripere is phenomenal, by the way.
