Sunn O)))'s first few albums were simply pure drone, but like many bands, you get bored of playing the same sort of stuff again and again, so Sunn O))) started getting more experimental with 'White1', an album that may be drone in nature, but its experimental qualities are interwoven between three completely different tracks.
The opener "My Wall", is a 25 minute-long dronescape that features a telling of a peculiar poem that is read by none other than British songwriter/musician Julian Cope, and throughout its mammoth length, really absorbs your attention as each line of his poem needs to be said aloud over the droning guitars. "The Gates of Ballard", is a very interesting 15 minute track that opens with a unorthodox folk piece before the riffs start to pour in, being accompanied by a drum machine. The last track, "A Shaving of the Horn that Speared You", is an unnerving seventeen minutes that features its usual guitar drones with some creepy background effects. While it may not be a patch on the previous album "Flight of the Behemoth", after a few listens, 'White1' does have a certain charm of its own.
