Confusion alert. Arise Therefore was originally the final album Will Oldham released under his Palace/Palace Music moniker but strangely now seems to be credited to Bonnie Prince Billy. Anyway other than that it is business as usual for Oldham as he crawls through another bunch of slow moving, fractured compositions helped as usual by his brother Paul but this time with Gastr Del Sol feller David Grubbs helping out. Recorded by Sir Steve Albini.

“Arise Therefore” is the last album Will Oldham recorded using the Palace/Palace Music Moniker. It is the follow-up to the brilliant “Viva Last Blues”. He went on to release “Joya” under his own name but since the release of “I See A Darkness” as Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy he has stuck with that as his nom de plume.
“Arise Therefore” is considerably starker sounding than its predecessor. The opening track, “Stablemate” is musically brooding and ominous with lyrics about a dying or dead relationship. This sets the tone for the album. There are no upbeat rock songs, no happy love songs with the exception of “No Gold Digger”, perhaps, in which the only virtues he extols about the girl he’s with is that she’s not a gold digger. It’s all very, very slow and the addition of a drum machine to the otherwise very organic sounding, Steve Albini produced guitar piano and bass makes for a different sound, but an interesting one nevertheless. The closing track, “The Weaker Soldier” is one of the album’s best.
