Highly Evolved by The Vines

The Vines I'm not sure about. I tend to like the Beatlesy type songs they do but the more rocky ones just sound like everyone else. What the fuss is about I'm not sure...... The new album is in here and now. I'm not a big fan but there's plenty of gushing reviews out there for you to check out and get all excited by. Highly evolved is on CD and LP

At the time of it's release in 2002, The Vines debut "Highly Evolved" was massively hyped and it seemed every issue of the NME had Craig Nichols on the cover and a story about him only ever eating cheeseburgers. I bought the album at the time. 13 years later when I had all but forgotten about the band, the title track shuffled on to my iTunes one day and I was quite pleased at first, I enjoyed it. More pleased when I decided to remind myself of the album in full and re-discover "Autumn Shade", a short, melodic and gently psychedelic number that always was my favourite track - still is as it turns out and it's the best song on the album. "Get Free" is one of those, as the above review says, that sounds like everybody else. Specifically in this case, Nirvana, or at least a poor copy of them. Overall, it's mostly forgettable, samey stuff but there are a handful of tracks, "Country Yard", perhaps, that make it worth a listen.
