8/10 Effie the cat Customer review, 3rd May 2017

Slammed in between "I See a Darkness" and "Master and Everyone" (both very high on most people's list of BPB albums) comes this, a grower/hit and miss. At its best it can be breathtaking, in a way that only Will Oldham can, simultaneously sparse, dark, romantic, cryptic yet full of longing/menace. The songs "Careless Love" and "After I Made Love To You" particularly illustrate this and are standout tracks. Then there are some that have more of a band and are a bit country. If you follow BPB you will know the sort of thing I mean. To my mind these are amongst his best of that form.

It's such a shame he put a few songs on that fall flat, such as "Just To See My Holly Home," which crosses the line into twee. For an artist of such talent to stray into mediocrity stops this record from being exceptional rather than great.
