David Tibet announces the release of a new Current 93 album in typically odd fashion, and also gives the album some typically odd quirks. If A Star Turns Into Ashes will be released as a limited run of 1000 picture discs in clear PVC sleeves. There will be 500 with a reproduction of a painting by David Tibet and 500 with a reproduction of a painting by him. This may mean that they’re all the same - but they're not, they're different colours. Oh David! The album also has an untitled track on each side.

I’ve not gone so deep into the works of Current 93 before and I’m more familiar with the more conventional structures of say ‘Black Ships Ate The Sky’.
These two extended pieces are somewhat reminiscent of the Caretaker with the vocal buried in the instrumentation like a fading memory. The dominant beat of a metronome strongly conveys the impression of time passing while the music shapeshifts in long arcing wails and sustained single notes. Quite a sense of foreboding which I guess is most relevant to these uncertain times - even before covid 19.
The two pieces are strikingly different with one seemingly optimistic than the other, but if the object of music is to stimulate emotions then they’re both very successful. Current 93 on the edge of abstraction is a demanding but rewarding listen.
