Room For The Moon by Kate NV

Kate NV is a Moscow-based producer, songwriter and composer with a background in post-punk. She was a member of Russian band ГШ, or GS for those who can’t read Cyrillic (like me!). Her latest album, Room For The Moon, follows-up  для FOR and sees her manipulated vocals woven into a fabric of xylophone, guitars, sax and synth.

I’m not sure how to describe it, but there’s a sound that’s become popular of late. It’s a sound that is mostly heard on reissues of records by labels like WEWANTSOUNDS and is simultaneously grounded in place and ferociously international. It was played by artists like Japan’s Akiko Yano and Lebanon’s Fairuz, though despite this burgeoning popularity, it has very few contemporary adherents.

Kate NV is one of them, the Russian artist first came to our attention in 2018 with ‘Для For’ for the ever prescient RVNG Intl., and now returns to the label with ‘Room For The Moon’, an album that can proudly stand shoulder to shoulder with those that inspired it. You may have noticed that I've so far avoided describing said sound, but I know I owe it to you, dear reader, to give it my best shot. So here I go. It’s a spry and lively funk-inflected pop, as comfortable being sparse as it is dense. There’s a deftness to it, for all the complexity of the music everything sounds very easy, and very cool.

Kate NV’s take is grounded by Jenya Gorbunov’s bass playing; his lithe grooves are truly delightful, and leave ample space for all sorts of other delights. The drumming is playful but metronomic, the rhythms are somehow simple and weird. NV’s singing is light and catchy, even as she switches effortlessly between English, French and Russian.

‘Room For The Moon’ is a very wonderful esoteric pop record. Get your copy now before some chancer puts out an expensive reissue in a few decades time.
