Recorded between London and Berlin, his songwriting and compositional abilities have expanded massively, capable of introspective sadness and outgoing positivity.

- Dining Alone by Fake Laugh
I have to say, Fake Laugh is a great name for a musical project. Really fantastic. And that album name too, ‘Dining Alone’, in combination they give you a good sense of the timbre of the thing. It’s light, it’s self-effacing, it’s sweet. Bosh, review done.
Fake Laugh is the work of one Kamran Khan, and is really delightful. It’s almost sickly, bright synths and Khan’s not quite falsetto vocals make for an album that at times can feel like staring into a bright light, or binging on sweets. But everything Khan does is pulled off with a slightly strange panache that really works to draw you in. On ‘Alarm Bells’ he is accompanied by some charmingly wonky synths that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Polytechnic Youth release, and the same could be said for the washed out library music-ish instrumental of ‘Plätze’.
‘If You Don’t Wanna Know’ is the album’s most upbeat track, which features a lot of Khan’s upbeat guitar playing that brings to mind the stuff Nilüfer Yanya did on the wonderful ‘Miss Universal’. The album ends upbeat too, ‘A Memory’ starts out as just a bass guitar and a drum machine, but halfway through Khan’s vocals are replaced by the sugariest guitar sound I’ve ever heard.
